Judge Bill Thompson AlabamaComments about Bill Thompson
Once known as the youngest judge elected to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, Bill Thompson is now known as judge (Pontius Pilot) who led the pack to take Judge Roy Moore out of office. In November 2003, Bill Thompson served as the Chief Judge of the Alabama Court of the Judiciary, a nine member special court extension of the Judicial Inquiry Commission composed of judges and citizens. Bill Thompson served as the Chief Judge of the tribunal due to his position on the Alabama Civil Court of Appeals.
The issue which faced the Court of the Judiciary in November 2003 regarding Chief Justice Judge Roy Moore was whether or not Judge Moore had violated one or more of the Canons of Judicial Ethics when he refused to obey an unlawful federal court order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the Alabama Judicial Building. The case had been referred to the Court of the Judiciary by the Alabama Judicial Inquiry Commission.
Prior to this trial, numerous judges had been reprimanded through sanctions including pay and work suspension for limited periods of time, as well as required attendance at rehabilitation centers for drug and alcohol offenders. In the history of the Court of the Judiciary, very few judges had been removed from office prior to Chief Justice Moore's trial, which required a unanimous vote by the 9-member panel. Previous violations included substance abuse on and off of the bench, possession and distribution of illegal drugs, and even one pedophile who had sexually abused juvenile offenders who had appeared in that same judge's court. All of these instances ended in sanctions.
Led by Bill Thompson, the Court of the Judiciary found that Chief Justice Roy Moore had so violated the Canons of Judicial Conduct that their only course of action was removal from office. Judge Thompson voted for Judge Moore's removal of office because Chief Justice Moore refused to obey an unlawful court order. The federal judge in the previous case did not have jurisdiction to order Chief Justice Moore to remove the Ten Commandment's monument. Chief Justice Moore was never afforded a show-cause hearing, the most basic of rights for someone accused of violating the law. Judge Bill Thompson showed no signs of contrition when he pronounced the sentence removing Chief Justice Roy Moore from office.

Judge Bill Thompson himself made the decision to remove Judge Roy Moore from the Alabama Supreme Court. His vote alone on the Judiciary Panel would have prevented Judge Moore from being removed from the Alabama Supreme Court. Judge Thompson now has on his resume, the Pontius Pilot of Alabama.
