Rick Santorum supported requiring individuals to buy health insurance

An old article about Rick Santorum has now surfaced showing that Santorum favored requiring individuals to buy health insurance. Santorum has rightfully attacked Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney as phony conservatives but if this report is true then Santorum is a hypocrite. The original report from The Morning Call states:

Santorum and Watkins would require individuals to buy health insurance rather than forcing employers to pay for employee benefits. Both oppose abortion services and support limits on malpractice awards. Santorum says non-economic damages should not exceed $250,000, adjusted annually for inflation, and lawyers’ contingency fees should be capped at 25 percent.

The report was covering the 1994 Republican Senate primary in which Rick Santorum defeated Joseph P. Watkins by a large margin of 81.5% to 18.5%. If this report stating that Santorum favored requiring individuals to buy health insurance is true it would be consistent with his support of other big-government intrusions into healthcare such as his vote for Medicare Part D.
